Ian McLagan Says "Never"
In December of 2007 Ian 'Mac' McLagan and Glyn Johns, his old pal from Small Faces and Faces days, met at Sphere Studios in London to mix and master Ian McLagan's beautiful and emotionally raw CD, Never Say Never. The self produced and directed album features McLagan's award winning Bump Band: 'Scrappy' Jud Newcomb, Don Harvey and Mark Andes, and includes all original songs written by one of the best-loved musicians of our time. Patty Griffin graces Never Say Never with her soulful vocals and she and the Tosca Strings can be heard on the final track, the heart wrenching When The Crying Is Over. McLagan recorded and produced Never Say Never at The Doghouse Studios in Manor, Texas, and recorded Where Angels Hide on the Steinway in The Edythe Bates Old Chapel at The International Festival-Institute in Round Top, Texas.
Never Say Never will be released on Proper Records in the UK/Europe on July 7, 2008.

Ian McLagan & the Bump Band kick off SXSW 2007 with a bang!
The Bump Band swept the Austin Music Awards with Ian McLagan winning Best Keyboards for the third straight year followed by his mates Don Harvey, snagging the Best Drums/Percussion honors and Mark Andes saluted as the Best Bass player in Austin. Then came the coup de grâce ...the Bump Band performed an Awards Show tribute to Ronnie Lane and were joined by surprise guest Pete Townshend on Kuschty Rye and What'cha Gonna Do About It. The Bumps and Townshend rocked the Convention Center rafters with a blinding performance that brought the crowd jumping to their feet.
View more photos from this historic South-by event courtesy of photographer, Ron Baker at Flickr.com.
Watch the live broadcast from the Music Awards at KVUE.com.
Check out the 2006 Austin Music Award winners here.
Townshend and keyboard player Ian McLagan held record execs in their thrall with a tribute to the late Ronnie Lane.
Kevin Phinney,
Seattle Post Intelligencer
The night's highlight was musical: SXSW keynote speaker and Who guitarist Pete Townsend sat in with Austin's Ian McLagan – banging their way through a pair of Faces tunes. It may have been a short cameo, but it nothing short of instant history for the Austin Music Awards and SXSW itself.
Andy Langer, News 8 Austin
Later, at the Austin Music Awards, Townshend sat in with his old pal Ian McLagan on a tribute to McLagan's former Small Faces bandmate Ronnie Lane, and lost himself in "Whatcha Gonna Do About It." McLagan had reminded Townshend that Small Faces guitarist Steve Marriott had "nicked" Townshend's trademark feedback on the original version. "Take it back tonight," McLagan told Townshend, who complied. The rest of the 25th Music Awards, held in the sterile confines of the Austin Convention Center, couldn't compare to that moment.
Michael Corcoran, Austin American Statesman
They used to call it a South By Southwest moment -- something that could only happen here during the festival that you're not likely to forget anytime soon. Last night's moment took place at the Austin Convention Center during the annual Austin Music Awards ceremony. Ian McLagan and the Bump Band were playing a tribute to the late Ronnie Lane when they brought a special guest on stage -- The Who's Pete Townsend.
McLagan now lives in Austin and is a fixture on the local scene --- he and his band won every instrumental award Wednesday night.
Journal Star, L. Kent Wolgamott

The Eel Pie Island Hotel
BBC Radio 4
30 January 2007 (13:30 GMT)
Lead singer with Manfred Mann, Paul Jones, looks back at the colourful history of The Eel Pie Island Hotel in Twickenham. In the late 1800s, Charles Dickens described the hotel as a 'place to dance to the music of the locomotive band'.
In the 1950s crowds flocked to the free jazz club that the hotel became, and in the '60s it became a regular haunt of R&B musicians, Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, The Yardbirds, The Who, and many a barefooted hippy tempted over the bridge by the promise of a free party.
Demolished in a mysterious fire in 1971, the hotel's history is preserved in the stories, poems and songs of the old islanders and musicians who played there - like George Melly, Ian McLagan and Ronnie Wood.

Announcing the deluxe edition reissue of one of Britain’s greatest musical works –
Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake
3-CD Deluxe Edition in circular metal tin.
June 5, 2006 on Sanctuary Records
|
Issued in mid-1968, Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake was a truly groundbreaking album in so many ways. Quite apart from containing some of the Small Faces’ finest moments, it was one of the first 'concept albums', side 2 featuring a novel narration from comic Stanley Unwin which punctuated songs following the quest of Happiness Stan to find the missing half of the moon! In packaging terms, too, it broke new ground, housed in a lavish foldout circular LP sleeve, inspired by an old tobacco tin.
Now Sanctuary pays homage to this seminal album by releasing a new 3-CD Deluxe Edition; featuring the stereo mix, a companion mono version (previously unavailable on CD) plus a further CD of BBC Radio 1’s ‘Classic Albums’ documentary on the making of the band. Originally transmitted in 1989, this last bonus disc features interviews with all four band members: singer/guitarist Steve Marriott, bassist Ronnie Lane (along with Steve, the band’s songwriting backbone), organist Ian McLagan and drummer Kenney Jones.
An important enough release in the 1960s to rival Sgt Peppers or Pet Sounds, Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake broke musical ground and put Small Faces where they belonged at the pinnacle of British music. Indeed, the album knocked The Beatles off #1, remaining there for five weeks. Across the Atlantic, the album had a similar impact in the US where it debuted at the much coveted #1 position. From the perennial hit single ‘Lazy Sunday’ to rockers like ‘Song Of A Baker’ and ‘Rollin’ Over’ and the ambitious instrumental title track, Ogdens’ is a masterpiece.
In 2006, both Small Faces and Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake have continued to exert a strong influence on popular music. Acts such as The Ordinary Boys, Blur, Paul Weller, Oasis, Kaiser Chiefs and Hard-Fi have all been known to cite Ogdens’ and Small Faces as providing an elementary role in the creation of their music.
It remains one of the most important albums of the 60s.

Big Sweet Life: The Songs of Jon Dee Graham
Willie Graham/Legg-Perthes Benefit CD/DVD
A truly amazing limited-edition two-disc set (CD and DVD), Big Sweet Life features Austin artists performing Jon Dee songs with all proceeds going to The Willie Graham/Legg Perthes Fund.
Jon Dee's son Willie has developed Legg Perthes, a rare childhood form of avascular necrosis of the hip. For reasons unknown, the head of the femur loses its blood circulation and dies. The Graham family lost insurance coverage when their insurance provider filed Chapter 11. Now Willie's condition is considered pre-existing by other companies, making him uninsurable. They may be looking at several years of treatment, physical therapy and surgery.
The CD was recorded live at the Continental Club by Oscar & Grammy-winning engineer/producer Chet Himes on June 24, when the Austin music community banded together for a benefit concert. Artists include The Resentments, Ian McLagan & the Bump Band, Steve Poltz, Bob Schneider, Alejandro Escovedo, Charlie Sexton, James McMurtry, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Matt The Electrician, The New Hot Damn (Kacy Crowley, Trish Murphy and Renee Woodward), Honky with Jon Dee, Beaver Nelson, Kathy McCarty, and Walter Tragert. The CD also features an original song by Willie Graham called "Rock 'n Roll" which was performed by Jon Dee, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Alejandro Escovedo and Charlie Sexton.
The DVD was produced by News 8 Austin's Andy Langer and features rooftop performances on July 27 & August 3 by Patty Griffin, Ray Benson, Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison, David Garza, Darden Smith, Jud Newcomb w/ the Tosca String Quartet, Jack Ingram, Jeff Klein, Elizabeth McQueen, and Terri Hendrix & Lloyd Maines. DVD extras include performances by Jon Dee and the Resentments. Also included is Andy's 22-minute interview with Jon Dee that details the cause that brought everyone together.
Order the CD & DVD for just $15 (benefits The Willie Graham/Legg Perthes Fund).
Update (9/19/05) - Ian McLagan & the Bump Band performed 'Something To Look Forward To' at the Continental Club benefit. Visit's Mac's forum for the complete track list.
